Viikki-speksi ry is an organisation founded in 2016 at the University of Helsinki's Viikki campus with the primary purpose of producing an annual speksi. Speksi is a student-driven form of musical theatre where the audience participates in the play by asking for improvisation. At a point of their choosing, audience members can shout ”omstart!” and the scene they've just seen is reenacted in a different way.

Viikki-speksi ry's member organisations are all student organisations on the Viikki campus. In addition to the annual production, Viikki-speksi organises events both for its members and open to all. In this way, Viikki-speksi contributes to interdisciplinary cooperation.
The Board of Directors of the association is responsible for the activities of Viikki-Speks. The Board is elected at the Association's meeting every spring.

Viikki-speksi welcomes all students from the Viikki campus, but other theatre enthusiasts are also welcome to join. The performances will take place in April, and rehearsals will start in the autumn.

Participating is also a good way to get to know students from outside your own subject organisation. The intensive exercises and activities throughout the academic year bring people close together and have cemented many friendships. So if you're interested, you should definitely come along and get a taste of the action at the Viikki Speks events, even if you don't have a clear vision of what kind of contribution you could make to the Speks. You can also join the Viikki-speksi association even if you don't participate in the production itself. This way you can participate in the events organised by Viikki-speksi for its members, and you are more likely to be informed about excursions organised by Viikki-speksi, for example to visit other speksis.

Speksi stands for interactive musical theatre by students. On or near the stage, there is a scripted play with accompanying music and dance performances, but the audience also gets to join in the fun by shouting “Omstart!”. When this shout is heard, at least the actors, but often also the band and the dancers, improvise and perform what they have just seen in a different way or add something to it. More interactivity is added by the possibility of adding a qualifier to the omstart, for example “Omstart, in Swedish!” or “Omstart, soap opera!”

The spice tradition originated in Sweden, in Uppsala in the 1500s, but it was not brought to Finland until the early 1900s. So Viikki speksi, founded in 2016, is a poppy compared to many other Finnish speksis. In our production, we aim to respect the traditions of spices culture, participate in promoting it and bring our own Viikkimäinen touch to the production.
